"Talent builds
I. The Protection Core
With 4.0 comes a significant restructuring of the talent trees and an increased degree of flexibility in how we spend them. The first step in any build is to put 31 points in the Protection tree.
There are 12 talents (23 points) that I would consider "essential" to be a successful raiding paladin. That means you have 8 "discretionary" points to spend in less essential talents to unlock the rest of the protection tree, and 10 points (only 5 at level 80) you can spend in any tree.
If you're coming here and just want to know "is my spec decent?" check against this core.....if you have all the talents here your spec is probably fine, if you don't it probably needs some work.
The Core: <modified link that contains only the 12 essential talents>
Divinity
Judgements of the Just
Toughness
Sanctuary
Hammer of the Righteous
Wrath of the Lightbringer
Shield of the Righteous
Vindication
Holy Shield
Sacred Duty
Shield of the Templar
Ardent Defender
For a discussion of what to do with those 8 "flavor" points in early protection, see the next section. If you're just interested in seeing some common builds, jump down to the "Common Builds" section.
II. Discretionary Points
To obtain all of the talents in the Core, you need to spend 8 points in the following manner:
2 in Tier 1
3 in Tier 4 or lower
3 in Tier 5 or lower
In Tier 1, you have the choice of Seals of the Pure or Eternal Glory. At this point, neither seems game-breaking; Seals of the Pure is about a 40 DPS increase per talent point spent, while Eternal Glory has the potential to let you get off some WoG's without dropping as much threat or cast more heals. If you plan on using Word of Glory a decent amount, Eternal Glory is likely to be a bigger DPS increase than Seals of the Pure (because you can WoG and follow it with ShoR some of the time).
For the Tier 4 points, you have quite a few choices. You can obviously fill Seals of the Pure or Eternal Glory. You also gain Improved Hammer of Justice from tier 2, which reduces the cooldown on your stun (useful for LK specs). In tier 3, we have Hallowed Ground, which is a weak single-target DPS increase but a fairly noticeable benefit when AoE tanking due to the mana reduction. In Tier 4, we add Reckoning and Grand Crusader to the mix. Reckoning is the largest single-target DPS increase available to you at this point, so it is highly recommended. Grand Crusader is a weaker DPS increase, but does have the benefit of being strong in AoE situations (provided you don't glyph Avenger's Shield for the improved damage) and giving you access to your interrupt more often.
Your choice here will likely depend on the content you're facing and your group composition. For single-targets, Reckoning and Grand Crusader are very reasonable choices, for AoE Hallowed Ground has potential, and for fight-specific specs Hammer of Justice and Eternal Glory are both decent options.
For the Tier 5 points, you add Guarded by the Light and Divine Guardian to the mix. At this point, it's unclear whether we'll really have much occasion to use Word of Glory, but at least one point in GbtL guarantees that if you do have to use it in an emergency, you'll keep your Holy Shield buff. Divine Guardian is an incredibly potent raid cooldown that can be game-breaking on some encounters. Again, the type of content you're facing will likely impact your decision - most raiders will pick up Divine Guardian and maybe one point in Guarded by the Light as a baseline.
III. The Leftovers
At 85, we have 10 more points (only 5 points at level 80) we can spend in any tree.
We can pick up threat increases from Arbiter of the Light and Judgements of the Pure in Holy or Crusade and Rule of Law in Retribution. We also have the option of going back and filling out Reckoning, Hallowed Ground, Seals of the Pure, or Grand Crusader in Protection. From best to worst, the order of these talents for raw DPS output against a single target is:
Reckoning > Crusade > Grand Crusader > Seals of the Pure > Rule of Law > Judgements of the Pure > Arbiter of the Light > Hallowed Ground
or, in graphical form: http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/forum/index.php?f=1&t=29589&rb_v=viewtopic
Now you see why Sacred Duty and Wrath of the Lightbringer are "mandatory" talents. Those two talents alone combine for over 1000 DPS, or roughly 1/8 of our total output.
For survivability, we have Protector of the Innocent in Holy and Guarded by the Light in Prot. Eternal Glory is probably better thought of as a threat talent in most cases - it reduces the DPS cost of using WoG as an "oh shit" button. If you're going to be chain-casting WoG on yourself a lot (e.g. for Hard Mode Lich King encounters), then these are all worthy talents to consider.
For utility, we have Improved Judgement and Pursuit of Justice in Ret, and Improved Hammer of Justice in Prot. Improved Judgements is very nice, and gives us another ranged pick-up tool to work with. Pursuit of Justice is subject to the age-old run speed debate. Hammer is somewhat anemic until they make good on their promise to turn it into an off-GCD interrupt for protection, so until then it won't see much use outside of fight-specific specs (HMLK in particular).
How you spend these 10 points is up to you - if you feel you need more threat, spend them in threat talents. If you want the utility of Imp. Judgement and PoJ, grab those. If you feel like your healers need some help, grab PotI/EG/GbtL.
I suspect that most people will be favoring Ret with their 10 points though. The second tier of Holy has nothing of value to us, while Crusade and Imp. Judgement are both very potent talents, and Pursuit of Justice has a devoted following.
IV. Common Builds
I expect that the "default" build will be a 0/31/5 that picks up the core prot talents, Seals of the Pure, Grand Crusader, and 1/2 Guarded by the Light, and then picks up Crusade and Imp. Judgement in Ret. The level 85 build would likely continue on to pick up Rule of Law and Pursuit of Justice. This build picks up all of the DPS-related prot talents except Hallowed Ground and enough utility to be very functional. Those who don't love PoJ may move those points to another threat talent (likely Hallowed Ground or Judgements of the Pure) or pick up more utility.
"Default" build: http://wowtal.com/#k...SL.a5o.paladin.
For a more threat-heavy build, I expect people to shift points around to take all of the most efficient threat talents. This variation would drop Improved Judgement, Guarded by the Light and Divine Guardian to pick up Hallowed Ground and Judgements of the Pure, giving a 2/31/3 spec.
Heavy Threat build: http://wowtal.com/#k...0R.a5o.paladin.
For a heavy-surviviability option, we'll want to pick up the WoG-buffing talents in the protection tree and Protector of the Innocent in Holy. To do that, we'll drop the weakest threat talent from the default build, which is Seals of the Pure. We'll also have to drop Improved Judgement, Grand Crusader (at least one point), and one point in Crusade. Note that the only way to keep Improved Judgement in this spec (if that utility is useful to you) is to give up Crusade entirely.
"WoG" build: http://wowtal.com/#k...Jm.a5o.paladin.
For a Lich King specific spec, you may want to pick up Improved Hammer of Justice as well. You can do this in a number of ways from the default build, but if you're working on Hard Mode you're likely using a WoG build, which restricts your choices. The best way to do this is to shift the last point out of Grand Crusader and drop one more point of Crusade for a 3/32/1 spec:
