How do I turn off my pet's skills?
For the most part, all you need to do to turn on or off a pet skill is to right-click it, either in the pet's Spellbook or on the pet action bar. Right-clicking the skill in either place will toggle the auto-cast state. If your pet is currently in Prowl, you may also want to left-click the Prowl skill once to kick him out of Prowl.
(By the way, auto-cast is on when the skill has little golden lines moving around its icon, and off when there is no gold moving highlights.)
That doesn't work! My pet won't stop Prowling and Cowering!
A couple of pet skills seem to be having problems staying off right now. Prowl and Cower are the two most notable offenders. Unfortunately there seem to be a couple of different things going on here.
The most common problem happens when a skill that is not on the pet action bar turns itself back on, usually after you dismount or summon your pet. The easiest work-around for this problem is to leave these skills on the pet action bar even though they are turned off. So long as the skill is on the pet action bar, it does not seem to randomly toggle its auto-cast state. This solution is inconvenient, but at least stops your pet from Cowering.
A similar but different problem happens when the skill is triggering regardless of its apparently auto-cast state. Sometimes it helps to try tunring off auto-cast in both the pet's Spellbook and the pet action bar, in case these are out of sync. And some hunters have been able to fix this behavior by resetting their UI.
Blizzard is aware of these problems, as well as other similar issues with pet skills, and will hopefully have them fixed quickly.
